This is what the post looked like three years ago... I wanted to say it was a very unique historical site... I hope it will be different in three years! It's still fenced off... It looks very long... I've never seen anything like it in Taiwan... If it's restored and a sign is put up explaining it... many people should come to see it. I hope Kinmen can restore and develop its historical sites... and not let the paint peel off so badly... a quaint and charming town.

Located outside Xiaoximen Village on the outskirts of Jincheng Township, this building, constructed of red bricks, red tiles, and green-glazed lattice windows, bears N.1 and N.2 series numbers on its walls and resembles a small gatehouse of a traditional house. This is the "Model Toilet," a name still fondly remembered by overseas Chinese for over a century. The builder, Wu Chaoping (1854-1936), made his fortune in the tobacco and alcohol business in Asa Port, Sumatra, Indonesia. Returning to his hometown of Xiaoximen, he built three large, double-courtyard houses. Because visitors often complained about the stench and unsightly open latrines in front of the houses, he negotiated with the owners. He then funded the purchase of a plot of public land on the outskirts of the village and built a public toilet for the villagers' daily use, which also served as a collection point for agricultural wastewater. Because of its neat and orderly appearance, serving as a model for the area, it was named the "Xiaoximen Model Toilet," and the faint inscription can still be seen on its facade today. Construction of the "Model Toilet" began in 1917. After its completion, the sanitation of Xiaoximen improved significantly, earning widespread praise compared to other areas in Kinmen at the time. This led to the enduring fondness of Wu Chaoping, who later changed his name to Wu Jinzhang and spent his later years on Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, passing away in 1936 at the age of 88. In 2007, the 18.41-meter-long and 5.75-meter-wide "Model Toilet," considered an important indicator of Kinmen's public health history and possessing preservation value, was designated a county-level historic site, making it the only "public toilet historic site" in the country. Having weathered over a century of storms, the Model Toilet has inevitably suffered damage and disrepair. Two of the 22 red bricks with their serial numbers N.10 and N.21 are missing, but the overall structure remains remarkably intact. Based on the preservation and maintenance of historical sites, the Kinmen County Cultural Affairs Bureau allocated a budget to plan renovations including the surrounding environment. The project was awarded for NT$7,273,000, and the contractor has already started work, with completion scheduled for the end of November this year.
