There is peace, but a full of memory place. You can read some poetry he wrote before you get here.

Located in Guangxing Village, Gaoshu Town, Pingtung County, the "Former Residence of Chung Li-ho" is Taiwan's first memorial hall dedicated to folk literature. This simple farmhouse witnessed the formative years of Chung Li-ho (1915-1960), the "Father of Taiwanese Folk Literature." Originally a traditional Fujian-style building, the residence was restored in 2009, preserving its earthen walls, black-tiled roof, and bamboo-woven partitions, recreating the appearance of a Hakka farmhouse in the 1930s. The hall displays manuscripts, letters, and farm tools, recreating the creative scene of his novel, *Lishan Farm*. --- ###**Life Anecdotes and Historical Imprints** #1. **The Starting Point of a Love Against Convention**: Chung Li-ho and his wife, Chung Tai-mei, faced family opposition to their "same-surname marriage." The couple eloped to Manchuria, and this struggle for love became the blueprint for *Same-Surname Marriage*. The former residence is the starting point of this forbidden love story. #2. **Writing Amidst Poverty and Illness:** After returning to Taiwan following the war, he contracted tuberculosis but persisted in writing despite financial hardship. Legend has it that he often wrote under the old banyan tree in his courtyard, manuscript paper spread on his lap, writing even while coughing up blood. His novel *Rain*, completed on his sickbed, won the first prize in the literary competition, but was revoked due to the White Terror. #3. **The Warmth of Friends' Support:** He passed away in abject poverty. Friends like Lin Haiyin initiated a fundraising campaign, raising funds for his funeral and even leading to the establishment of a memorial hall, showcasing the camaraderie among literary figures. ---###**An Eternal Beacon of Literature:** The 2009 film *The Native Land* was filmed here, recreating the image of Chung Li-ho pushing his bicycle with Ping-mei (Chung Tai-mei) across the paddy fields. Today, his famous quote stands in the courtyard of his former residence: "I am not a patriot, but the fate of Taiwan is my fate." ###The low-rise houses continue to illuminate the grassroots spirit of Taiwanese literature, becoming a pilgrimage site for exploring the soul of the land.

It is obviously an old house that has been renovated, but unfortunately there have been few tourists for a while and the exhibits have not been properly maintained. Perhaps we have to wait for the next Hakka cultural event to bring new vitality to it.
